Halloween is definitely that time of the year when it’s perfectly fine and acceptable to watch the scariest and most disturbing films there are and have no one judge you. However, for the kids and the kids-at-heart who’d rather not watch something nightmare-inducing and would just like to stick with the movies that has just the right amount of spooky vibe in it for the yearly event, there are a lot of titles out there — both the new and classic ones — that you can watch on your family movie nights!

This anime is set in Hotel Transylvania, a five-stake resort owned by Dracula where monsters and their families can visit and no humans are allowed. One weekend, Dracula invites his friends and their families to celebrate his daughter Mavis’ 118th birthday. Things get complicated when one ordinary guy stumbles into the hotel and changes everything. This film features the voices of Adam Sandler, Selena Gomez, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, and more.

E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial is about an alien who has been left behind on Earth and is saved by young Elliot who decides to keep him hidden. Coraline is an animated film about a girl named Coraline who discovers a door to a fantasy version of her life while wandering her old hours. To be able to stay in the fantasy, she must make a real and frightening sacrifice. The film’s voice cast includes Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Ian McShane, Keith David, Jennifer Saunders, and more.

From Tim Burton comes The Nightmare Before Christmas, a dark fantasy movie about Jack Skellington, known as the King of Halloweentown, who becomes bored with frightening people in the “real world” annually. He gets a new lease on life when he stumbles upon Christmastown, and he finds himself getting obsessed with the yearly holiday. He then decides to bring Christmas under his control by kidnapping Santa Clause and taking over his role, only to end up realizing that his plans can also go seriously wrong.

Hocus Pocus is another Halloween classic that was released back in 1993. It follows a teenager named Max Dennison who accidentally frees a coven of evil witches while exploring an abandoned house with his sister and their new friend. The kids must then steal the witches’ book of spells with the help of a magical cat to stop them from being immortal. It stars Omri Katz, Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy.

In this 1995 classic, Casper is a young ghost boy who peacefully haunts a mansion in Maine falls in love with a human girl named Kat, who’s the child of a specialist who arrives at the mansion to communicate with Casper and his fellow spirits. Casper and Kat’s relationship becomes complicated not only because of his transparent state but also because of the apparition of his uncles and their antics. Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, and more star in this film.

Corpse Bride is another film by Tim Burton, and it features the voices of Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Emily Watson, and Richard E. Grant. It centers on Victor and Victoria, whose families arrange their marriage. While practicing his lines for the wedding, Victor finds himself dragged to the land of the dead by a tree branch that becomes a hand. It’s there that he meets Emily, a girl murdered after eloping with her love, and now wants to marry Victor. He must then find a way to get back aboveground before Victoria marries the villainous Barkis Bittern.

Monster House is about three young boys who discover that their neighboring house is actually a living creature that wants to harm them. Despite this, no adults believe them, and so they must find a way to destroy the structure before the trick-or-treaters are put in danger. Coco

This Disney-Pixar film follows a 12-year-old boy named Miguel who finds himself in the colorful Land of the Dead after a mysterious chain of events during the Mexican holiday Dia De Muertos. Together with a trickster named Hector, they go on a journey to unlock the story of Miguel’s family history, all while finding a way to get back to the land of the living.

Beetlejuice centers on Barbara and Adam Maitland who, after dying in a car accident, find themselves stuck in their country residence, which is bought by the unbearable Deetzes and their teen daughter Lydia. The Maitlands then try to scare them away, attracting the attention of Beetlejuice — a spirit whose help becomes dangerous for Lydia and the Maitlands. It stars Michael Keaton, Michael Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, and more.

He then becomes a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he meets friends who help him discover the truth behind his parents’ deaths.
